A Post-Mortem on the 2018 Midterm Elections:
What Happened and What Did Not

The major news media have reported a number of accounts concerning the recent midterms elections. These concern a wide range of factors: the impact of Trump's approval ratings, the economy, the large number of Republican retirements from Congress, and the very high turnout rates in several states. In this talk, the speaker will present his own assessments of these factors, and show that some of the media reports are correct, but some are not.

Speaker: D. Roderick Kiewiet is Professor of Political Science at Caltech. He is the author of Macroeconomics and Micropolitics (1983) and co-author of The Logic of Delegation (1991). He is also co-author of Stealing the Initiative: The Response of State Government to Direct Democracy (2000), Legislatures: Comparative Perspectives on Representative Assemblies (2002), and Our Kids, Our Money, and Our Schools (forthcoming). He has also authored or co-authored articles on several political and election-related topics.

The UCLA Emeriti Association and the UCLA Retirees Association (UCLARA) are both all-volunteer organizations that advocate for UCLA's retired faculty/staff and plan programs for their members. Support their advocacy efforts by joining or renewing your membership. Membership forms will be available at the program.
