The Autry was established in 1988 by actor and businessman Gene Autry as “Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum,” to explore and share the comprehensive story of the American West and its multiple cultures. This terrific collection includes 21,000 paintings, sculptures, costumes, textiles, firearms, tools, toys, musical instruments, and other objects.
Located in Griffith Park across from the LA Zoo, the Parks Gallery has been organized into three themed areas including Religion and Ritual, Land and Landscape, Migration and Movement, and contains two mini galleries with revolving exhibits.
Our visit happily coincides with “Coyote Leaves the Reservation: The Art of Harry Fonseca”, and “Indian Country: The Art of David Bradley” with his trademark blend of traditional imagery, contemporary experience, and vibrant color. Both collections are at once serious and fun, historical and contemporary.
