               Alan Chapman                              Karen Benjamin

Sponsored by the UCLA Emeriti Association and the UCLA Retirees Association.

The super-talented husband and wife team of Alan Chapman (KUSC host) and Karen Benjamin (singer and actress) have developed and perform a program of songwriter Jay Livingston and composer Ray Evans works, with commentary, for us as part of the After Lunch Lecture series.  In 2006, Alan and Karen performed with lyricist Evans, then age 91, with whom they made special arrangements of the songs.  Thanks to the time spent with Evans, Alan can tell the fascinating stories behind the songs that reveal the work of this amazing song-writing team.

Livingston and Evans' songs include "Que Sera Sera," "Buttons and Bows," "Mona Lisa, “Tammy," and lots more. Join us for a magical musical tour of these award-winning tunes, performed by Alan on piano and Karen providing the vocals, with special insight into the hit makers, Livingston and Evans.

Jay Livingston             Ray Evans

This remarkably talented couple, Karen Benjamin and Alan Chapman, have performed in cabaret evening shows; including their "Songwriters and Their Songs" show as well as programs combining original works by Chapman and classic songs all over the US and have composed for film and stage.

Karen performed for 4.5 years in the "Phantom of the Opera" here in Los Angeles. And with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a tribute to Stephen Sondheim.  Alan composed music for his children's opera "Les Moose: The Operatic Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" (commissioned by LA Opera) and his signature song, "Everybody Wants to be Sondheim."
