Circa 1521: Mexico and the Art of Empire

"Coronation Stone of Motecuhzoma II (Stone of Five Suns)", 1503
The Art Institute of Chicago
Join the Retirees on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 11 AM for a virtual tour with Clare Kuny of Art Muse LA
In 1521, 500 years ago, the region we know as Mexico was dominated by the Aztec. The center of their empire was the grand city of Tenochtitlan, which they built on an island in Lake Texcoco. In this city where at least 150,000 people lived, a market flourished with goods from all reaches of the empire, monumental stone buildings were brightly painted and colossal sculptures honored gods and marked significant events. Join Art Muse LA director Clare Kunny, who specializes in 16th century Mexican art, to consider how the imperial art of the Aztec figured in their daily lives before the encounter with the Spanish and the eventual fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521.
