A Tour of the Getty Villa
Even as a young man, J.Paul Getty had an appreciation for the arts and began seriously collecting art in the 1930s. Among his primary interests were Greek and Roman antiquities, By the late 1960s, it became apparent a larger space was need than merely the small ranch house that he had opened to the public. When J. Paul Getty saw Herculaneum, he was entranced and was determined to recreate the Villa dei Papiri from the ancient site. The Getty Villa houses approximately 44,000 works of art from an extensive collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. Over 1,200 objects are currently on display. This tour will give you a brief history of the Villa and Mr. Getty's life. It will also showcase the exquisite gardens, architecture and highlights from the collection. Step back in time for a bit and experience the wonder that is the Getty Villa.
Our Guide is Ms. Lee Rubenstein, who holds dual degrees in English and History with a minor in Art History. She has been leading gallery tours for students at the Getty since 2012. In addition, she created and runs a volunteer art program in a Title I school.
