Tour of the Japanese American National Museum
As the national repository of Japanese American history, JANM creates groundbreaking historical and arts exhibitions, educational public programs, award-winning documentaries, and innovative curriculum that illuminate the stories and the rich cultural heritage of people of Japanese ancestry in the United States. JANM also speaks out when diversity, individual dignity and social justice are undermined, vigilantly sharing the hard-fought lessons accrued from this history. Its underlying purpose is to transform lives, create a more just America and, ultimately, a better world.
Our 1 hour, docent led tour of the Museum will be led by a community member. Our larger group will be divided into 3 smaller groups to better experience the JANM's exhibits. Our primary exploration will be the exhibit "Common Ground" which chronicles Japanese American history, beginning in the late 1800s with the early days of the Issei (first generation) pioneers and continuing through the World War II incarceration, post-war resettlement, and the redress movement.

UPDATE-The JANM has reinstated their "Free Thursdays" tour, so our tour is now gratis. The NO cost per attendee or JANM members who attend, but all must register. Each registered attendee is allowed 1 guest. Please arrive at the entrance to the Museum no later than 12:20 so that we may begin on time at 12:45pm.
NOTE: Even though the JANM does not require proof of vaccinations, we will ask that you confirm your vaccination status at the reception area. Masking is strongly encouraged while inside the JANM. If you feel ill or have COVID symptoms at the time of the event, PLEASE do not attend out of respect for your fellow retirees.
