Hike Description:
Distance 2.5 miles, easy trail, 390 ft of elevation change, Approx. 1.5 hours.
Setting out from the parking lot near the merry-go-round, you will head to the southwest along the Fern Canyon Nature Trail, before turning to the northwest to climb further uphill. Here, you will loop around the park and pass by plenty of old animal enclosures that once held a variety of animals up until 1966 when the park closed.
There is also an option for hiking up the Fern Canyon to the view point to the west for about 2 miles after the loop.
A short stop on the way home might be the Griffith Park Visitors' Center. And the nearby Autry Museum of the American West may be another option for a longer visit to the park.
Where: Meet at the parking area near the Merry-Go-Round just off Chrystal Springs Drive.

What to Bring: Dress in weather appropriate layered clothing, water, a hat, sunscreen. Snacks or picnic lunch for afterwards, there is no food nearby.
Restrooms: Located northwest of the parking area, between the Merry-Go-Round and the tennis courts.
Parking: Parking is free Lot 1 near the Merry-Go-Round but expect traffic (both auto and foot).
How to get there: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles, turn left on Griffith Park Drive. You'll see the Park's Visitor Center nearby.
Registration: There is no cost for this hike. But you MUST include the name of your emergency contact and their phone number. AND the same information for any guests you invite.
