Papyrus of Pasherashakhet (detail), Egyptian, about 375–275 BC. Ink on papyrus. Getty Museum. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Kraus

Who isn’t fascinated by religious practices of the ancient Egyptians and their preparation for the afterlife. Egyptians rigorously prepared for eternity by developing a set of religious writings to help the deceased achieve a blessed afterlife in union with the solar god Re and the netherworld god Osiris (see above). Known as the Book of the Dead, these writings were recorded on papyrus scrolls, linen mummy wrappings, and other funerary objects. Come learn about the mysteries from Getty’s Book of the Dead manuscripts, which have never been on public view before.

Join us for a virtual tour of two Getty Villa Exhibitions which examine the afterlife and eternity through the Book of the Dead and portrait sculpture. Our guide, Getty Villa docent Margot Metzner, will lead our visit to The Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibit which closed this past January and Sculpted Portraits from Ancient Egypt which is currently on view. The works in this exhibition are on special loan from the British Museum in London so you’ll be able to see them in person.
