Tour of the Japanese American National Museum
As the national repository of Japanese American history, JANM creates groundbreaking historical and arts exhibitions, educational public programs, award-winning documentaries, and innovative curriculum that illuminate the stories and the rich cultural heritage of people of Japanese ancestry in the United States. JANM also speaks out when diversity, individual dignity and social justice are undermined, vigilantly sharing the hard-fought lessons accrued from this history. Its underlying purpose is to transform lives, create a more just America and, ultimately, a better world.
Our 1 hour, docent led tour of the Museum will be led by a community member. The tour (~75 minutes with arrivals, introductions, and the tour) includes a presentation about the museum's history and origins, a walkthrough of the new core exhibition on the first floor (including a slideshow showing artist renditions, plus any items that have already been installed), and a tour of the second floor areas (including the Education Center, Temporary Galleries, Hirasaki National Resource Center, and more).
The new core exhibition, In the Future We Call Now: Realities of Racism, Forging Democracy, will fill the newly redesigned galleries, where space was gained from former office, hallway, and library spaces as well as the existing Weingart galleries.
Note that the Museum is not yet open to the public (due in Jan. 2027), so we will have a great preview of the new exhibition and the new areas of the Museum before the public.
Space is limited for the tour at 10am. If needed, we can offer a second tour at 2pm. Further information will be sent via email to those who register; so please make sure your email address is accurate.
