    ERRC Bruin Legacy Tour: "UCLA Fowler Museum"

    Join us for a guided tour of a special exhibit at the Fowler at UCLA, Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology and Art!

    Fire Kinship reintroduces fire as a generative element, one that connects us to our past and offers a collective path toward a sustainable future. On view from January 22, 2025 to April 12, 2026, the exhibition presents a living history that centers the expertise of Tongva, Cahuilla, Luiseño, and Kumeyaay communities.

    Prior to the colonization of Southern California in the 18th century, Native communities throughout the region used controlled fire practices to ensure the vitality of their local ecosystems. Fire-based land management practices ranged from small burns to spur healthy plant growth, to larger ones that strategically eradicated invasive species and reduced fuel loads (preventing catastrophic fires). Fire Kinship counters the attitudes of fear and illegality around fire, arguing for a return to Native practices, in which fire is regarded as a vital aspect of land stewardship, community wellbeing, and tribal sovereignty. These conversations have been shaped by key community leaders throughout Southern California: Lazaro Arvizu Jr. (Tongva), Marlene’ Dusek (Payómkawichum, Kúupangawish, Kumeyaay, and Czech), William Madrigal (Cahuilla/ Payómkawichum), Wesley Ruise Jr. (La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians), Stanley Rodriguez (Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel), William Pink (Pala Band of Luiseño Mission Indians), Lorene Sisquoc (Mountain Cahuilla/ Fort Sill Apache), and Myra Masiel-Zamora (Pechanga Band of Indians). The baskets, ollas, rabbit sticks, bark skirts, and canoes presented in this exhibition were made possible through the relationship between people, place, and fire.

    This one hour guided tour is offered at NO COST.

    Space is limited

    308 Charles E. Young Dr North, Westwood, Los Angeles, CA 90024. (Click Here for Google Map)

    Mary Cassatt                           Ruth Iskin

    The UCLA Emeriti and Retirees Associations are pleased to present a wonderous lecture on the life of Mary Cassatt, artist, and activist given by her biographer, Ruth Iskin, PhD. Dr. Iskin will be describing the life of Ms. Cassatt with talk and slides to emphasize her impact on the world. The event will be held at the University Club (on campus) on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 1:30pm.

    The first comprehensive study of Cassatt’s life, work, and legacy through the prism of a transatlantic framework.
    This book re-envisions Mary Cassatt in the context of her transatlantic network, friendships, exhibitions, politics, and legacy. Rather than defining her as either an American artist or a French impressionist, author Ruth E. Iskin argues that we can best understand Cassatt through the complexity of her multiple identifications as an American patriot, a committed French impressionist, and a suffragist.

    About the author:  Ruth E. Iskin is author of Modern Women and Parisian Consumer Culture in Impressionist Painting and The Poster: Art, Advertising, Design, and Collecting, 1860s–1900s, editor of Re-envisioning the Contemporary Art Canon, and coeditor of Collecting Prints, Posters, and Ephemera. She is Professor Emerita at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Her work has been translated into eight languages. And she led the Visual Arts Program at UNEX for many years.

    Copies of Dr. Iskin’s book;

    Mary Cassatt between Paris and New York: The Making of a Transatlantic Legacy

    Can be obtained in advance by contacting University of California Press.  Choose the “UCPress” option when asked to select a vendor. Use code UCPSAVE30 when checking out  for a 30% discount on the book.  https://www.ucpress.edu/books/mary-cassatt-between-paris-and-new-york/hardcover

    The book will also be for sale at the lecture on Oct. 9, 2025 and will be sold by ASUCLA Bookstore. The author will be signing copies at the event.                                                                                            Join us on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 1:30pm at the University Club, located on the UCLA campus at 480 Charles E.  Young Drive EAST. Countless fans know and love Leonard Bernstein’s landmark work with songs like “America,” “Somewhere” and “I Feel Pretty,” but few have seen it like this! Originally conceived as an opera, "West Side Story" is a tribute to Bernstein’s impact as only we can, with James Conlon leading the brilliant LA Opera Orchestra—not to mention a magnificent cast in top vocal and physical form. Director Francesca Zambello dives into one of the most emblematic works of American theater with this elevated, maximalist take that incorporates the iconic original choreography created by the legendary Jerome Robbins.

    New York City’s West Side is split between the Jets and the Sharks—but these warring gangs never imagined that two of their own could fall in love. Tenor Duke Kim is Tony, a former Jet who finds himself falling for Maria (the radiant Gabriella Reyes). But Maria is promised to another, and her brother Bernardo is more than willing to rally his Sharks to keep it that way. The two lovers dream of a happily ever after, but their neighborhood can see tragedy coming a mile away.
